Torrentis Products
The sport of fly-fishing and the food items fish are eating are
obviously intimately related. This purpose made range of nets are designed with
one goal in mind, that is to help anglers understand one of natures most
intriguing codes and find out what the fish we are trying to catch are actually
feeding on. Most anglers have frustrating stories of occasions when fish are
rising all around them yet ignoring all their favourite patterns leaving them
beaten and bemused. All this can now change; you do not even have to be skilled
in bug identification because by catching and looking carefully at the food
available to the fish you can simply choose an artificial fly to best match
what you see. You’ll be amazed at what you find and a whole new world will be
revealed.

These are British made quality products. Each net uses a soft
yet tough 1mm mesh that is insect-friendly. This ensures all captured
bugs can be released without harm after visual examination. The mesh is white
and helps to highlight the bugs that are often small and dark in colour.
Skima,
ideal for the wading river angler trying to solve the
problem of what rising fish are feeding on. Simple one handed operation, just
hold in a fashion similar to that of a fan using your thumb to control the
spread of the net arms as you skim items of interest from the water surface in
the area of fish activity. The Skima is fitted with an eyelet so can be
attached to a zinger for instant use, or alternatively just roll it up and keep
it in your pocket.
Approximate
size when open 200mm x 200mm
Bug
Skreen, intended for the angler trying to find out
what is available for the fish to feed on either at the water surface or within
the water column of both rivers and stillwaters. In rivers hold across the flow
in the area just downstream of fish activity allowing the samples to wash onto
the mesh. It can also be used to sample which bugs are living on the riverbed
or in weed. To do this just hold across the flow in the shallows and gently
disturb a small area of riverbed or weed just upstream of the Bug Skreen, this
will release bugs into the flow where they are carried to the mesh and trapped.
On stillwaters use the Bug Skreen to sweep the downwind margins where any
potential food items will collect. When not in use the Bug Skreen rolls up to
fit in the larger pockets of most fly-fishing vests and fishing bags.
Approximate
size when open 500mm x 300mm
Mini Bug Skreen,
simply a smaller more compact version of the Bug Skreen above. It is used in
exactly the same way but will roll up and fit into the smaller pockets of
fly-fishing vests and bags.
Approximate size when open 300mm x 220mm

Sample Examination
This folding pocket sized wallet contains the Torrentis Bug Size & Colour Evaluation
System. The kit allows the practical fly-fisher to quickly and easily gauge
the size and colour shade of individual bugs caught by the waterside and on
which fish could be feeding, this information is vital in the quest to choose
the best patterns to consistently deceive the fish. The Torrentis system also
gives the angler the opportunity to record details of these creatures, such
important information can be used for reference at the fly tying bench or just
general interest that all helps lead to a better understanding of the bugs
& beasties that make up the food chain of the fish we are trying to catch.
Most importantly after observation your captive can be released without harm
and you can get on with some fishing!
The wallet contains a clear acrylic bug observation
box (also available separately),
tough waterproof laminated size grid and colour shade reference cards (also
available separately), lightweight good
quality X8 folding magnifier (also available separately), a soft brush (also available separately) that is
useful to transfer delicate specimens to the observation box, pencil & note cards and a full “Hints & Tips”
information sheet.
Approximate size when closed 140mm x 100mm
The
Torrentis Bug Size & Colour Evaluation System is not intended to give the
angler all the information needed to fully identify every individual bug to
species level. To be realistic it is simply not practical to do this at the
waterside and in most cases unnecessary in a practical fishing situation. If
you do want to follow the path of species identification you will need to take
away specimens for further study at home with good quality reference books.
Fly-fishermen who tie their own flies or who have a keen
interest in the entomology side of the sport occasionally like to take away
examples of bugs they find. These can be studied in far greater detail at home
and stored for future reference as part of a collection.
The bugs can be
those caught in sample nets or those found inside fish. Once
back at home any live specimens can be killed by dropping them directly
into Isopropyl alcohol (Isopropyl alcohol can still be obtained from chemist
shops but you may have to order it). Samples can be preserved and stored in a
solution of 70% Isopropyl alcohol and 30% water for many years. At a pinch you
can use neat vodka or other similar clear spirit as
a killing agent and preserving medium. Finally, it is very
important that all sample containers are clearly labelled with complete details
of their contents and chemicals used, keep them in a safe
place out of direct sunlight and well away from the reach of children and pets.
Bug
Sample Collecting Kit. Designed for the angler to use by the
waterside, everything you need (except a net) is enclosed in a convenient
wallet that when closed fits easily in your pocket.
Each wallet contains
three tough leak resistant screw topped tubes (also available separately) with
a pencil and notepad to record the details of the contents. A soft brush is
included (also available separately) that is useful to transfer delicate
specimens off your bug nets to a sample tube without damaging them. The
specimens can be either kept dry in the tubes or in water and should be okay
for a few hours. However, as soon as you get home the specimens need to be
dealt with (see notes on this above).
Approximate
size when closed 150mm x 110mm

Storage Jars. These
are for use at home and will keep specimens stored in a 70% Isopropyl
alcohol and 30% water solution for many years and are
highly recommended. The jars are British made good quality
clear soda glass with screw-topped lids. These are supplied in packs of three
or five and because of the fragile nature of glass these may be posted separate
if they are part of a mixed order.
Approximate
size 53mm wide & 55mm high with 60ml capacity.
